About a little more than a year back we built our backyard. It’s completely conceptualized by my parents. Of course, my mom (especially)discusses everything with me, so I get to give my inputs from a very young age. And our fantastic house contractor helped build it. And now our backyard is our special place. During this lockdown we have spent many evenings sitting in our backyard, playing badminton and in general laughing at my Dad’s jokes.
This post should have been posted long back. This relaxing backyard reading nook was conceived and created by me for Mother’s Day but with everything going on I did not have time to post about it.
We have quite a few fruit trees in our backyard and we have three oleander trees in full bloom. Every year I see both my parents argue over how much to trim them. Dad who has a serious phobia of worms and insects stays away from anything and everything that could be home to them. And Mom’s green thumb looks for every possible inch of soil where she could plant a sapling. Even though Dad grudgingly waters her plants every evening, but given a chance he would pour concrete everywhere and stay away from plants. I find their fights hilarious with Mom winning every time and somewhere I also feel that Dad wants to lose too.
Anyways, I made full use of the trees that we have and set up this surprise relaxing reading nook for my mom for Mother’s Day in our backyard.
I will put together the set up below:
- We have a wooden deck and bench on one side of our backyard and I utilized that.
- I took and placed one of our old rugs on the deck.
- I took some mason jars which are actually recycled pasta sauce jars and hang them up with some twine from a couple of branches on our apple tree. Our front yard is full of roses in bloom, so I placed a few roses in the mason jars.
- I also hung a couple of tea light holders which were gifted to us.
- And then got a few pillows out.
- Some of my mom’s favorite books.
- A couple of candles along with their stands.
- A blanket holder and blanket.
- Some decorative glass bottles which we generally keep indoors.
- And also made her some tea and of course the French Cookie box that I handmade and gifted her on Mother’s Day.
My mom was really touched. I think sometimes doing a little something thoughtful is way more important than an expensive gift. My mom loved this idea of the relaxing backyard reading nook and now I see her how often she creates a relaxing backyard reading nook for herself and sits there with a glass of wine or a cup of tea/coffee.
I think this lockdown has made staying home very enjoyable and innovative.
